Chapter 11

The first few weeks in the Gibborim Mia spent asleep. She had come so close to dying that Hermia had decreed she needed to rest until her body had recovered. Haston came to sit with his daughter whilst she was awake, but their conversations were stilted, and Mia sat staring at the walls whilst her father tried to elicit some reaction from her.

Mathias knew that Mia had suffered greatly at the hands of the king and his men, but he also knew that the death of Joab played a part in her depression. Haston did what he could to help his daughter, but the torture she had endured was not something that Mia could tell her father about.

Haston knew there were things that his daughter was keeping from him and grew more and more frustrated by the silence he elicited from her.

Mathias sat quietly in the corner of Mia’s room. He spent his time reading the piles of reports and messages that Layla allowed him to have access to whilst Mia slept. When she was awake, Mathias sat and watched the young woman out of the corner of his eye and listened to the conversations that her father attempted to have with her.

During the night, Mia would awake screaming and Mathias would move to her side and comfort her until she was calm enough to go back to sleep. When Mia woke in the mornings, she didn’t remember her nightmares or the assassin comforting her. All she felt was the emptiness that losing Joab had brought and the shame of what the king and Regus had done to her.

“There must be something that we can do to help her,” Haston said with frustration as he sat with Hermia and Haman.

“She has gone through more than any of can imagine and most of it was at the hands or by the order of my son,” Hermia said, shaking her head.

“Those that have endured so much, so young, they must find their own way to deal with the pain of loss and the agony of being broken by the cruelty of others,” Haman sighed.

“I am her father; there must be something I can do to help her,” Haston growled.

“It is precisely because you are her father that you can do nothing to help. A daughter never wants to disappoint her father, she will do all she can to make him proud. She will cry in his arms when she is hurt, but she will never tell you anything that she thinks will make you ashamed of her,” Hermia said gently.

“There is nothing she could do to shame me,” Haston spat back defensively.

“She doesn’t feel that way. Her spirit has been broken and it will take time for the damage to be repaired,” Hermia soothed.

“Give her time, you may find that Mathias can help her more than you can,” Haman offered.

“You think that Mathias will be able to fix this for her?” Haston grunted.

“Fix? No, everything that she has seen she will have to deal with herself and learn how to move on from it.
